Temples, sieges, Knights and the George Cross. A short history of a small island that the whole Mediterranean has fought over.
Why it matters
Malta’s position in the central Mediterranean made it strategically priceless. The Great Siege of 1565 and the bombing of the Second World War are defining chapters — and Valletta’s bastions, forts and shelters still carry their memory.
Many cultures, one identity
Byzantine, Arab, Norman and Sicilian rulers each left a layer. You can hear it in the Maltese language and see it in the walls of Mdina — a city with medieval roots that never fell.
