Malta’s megalithic temples are among the oldest free-standing structures on Earth. A walk through Ġgantija, Mnajdra and Tarxien.
Stone before history
Long before the Knights, the Romans or the Phoenicians, prehistoric islanders hauled limestone blocks weighing tonnes into temples aligned with the sun. Ġgantija on Gozo is the oldest of them.
Mnajdra at the solstice
At Mnajdra, the Lower Temple’s entrance frames the sunrise on the equinoxes — a calendar carved in stone above the sea near Qrendi.
